The best Redmi phone from Xiaomi is still limited, but it can still compete with flagships.
Redmi Note 13 Pro+ :-Top-tier phones are continuously losing ground to midrange phones. Although the benefits of expensive flagship phones are getting worse, they are still widely available. How practical do you think the distinctive features of today’s flagships are? It is up for debate. One excellent example of a midranger that can compete with much more expensive gadgets is Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 13 Pro+.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ boasts a great display, a snappy performance, a large capacity, and a beautiful appearance. The phone charges quickly, has a strong camera, and is both robust and waterproof. You can not have everything, so yes, the auxiliary cameras are poor, wireless charging is not available, and you have to put up with Xiaomi’s software. The price of the Redmi Note 13 Pro+, which is €499 in Europe and £449 in the UK, is reasonable.
Stunning Redmi
Although midrangers are frequently blatantly bland and phones have become less interesting to look at, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ is attractive. Although it has a metal frame and a well-known curved glass sandwich, it is also svelte and elegant. The rear of my Aurora Purple review device features a beautiful matte finish, a fascinating geometric flourish at the top, and delicate tone shifts that identify the flash and Redmi logo on one side and the prominent camera lenses on the other. It gave me the need to have some Battenberg. Although black or white are other options, purple looks the nicest.
On the bottom edge are a SIM tray and a USB-C port, and on the right spine is the standard power button with a volume rocker above. While the smaller Note 13 versions still include a 3.5-mm audio connection, this variant lacks one. Beautiful 6.67-inch AMOLED screen with a front-facing camera notch at the top and a fingerprint sensor at the bottom. The fingerprint scanner worked well for the most part, although sometimes I had to push down on it several times before it would unlock.

Display Perfomance Redmi Note 13 Pro+
For incredibly smooth action, the display can support a refresh rate of 120 Hz, however it is not expandable and defaults to 60 Hz. (Displays with a 1 Hz scaling range consume less power.) The screen is bright and crisp, with highlights able to reach a maximum brightness of 1,800 nits. There were no problems for me when I read it outside. HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are supported. There are good stereo speakers and a good picture quality for movies and games, however it is recommended that you connect headphones or earbuds using the Bluetooth 5.3 compatibility.
Thankfully, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ has an IP68 classification, so dust and water resistance are not an issue for a phone in this price range. To safeguard the display, there is also Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Midrange phones frequently make compromises in these two areas.
RAM and Internal Storage
If you purchase the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ in the UK, it comes with 512 GB of storage and a huge 12 GB of RAM. On paper, the MediaTek Dimensity 7200-Ultra CPU inside is not as good as some of its rivals, but I did not find any problems with it. I transitioned from emailing to web surfing to filming without stuttering. After playing Dead Cells for a while, it grew a little warmer, but the frame rate held steady.
Battery & Charger
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ has a strong battery life and survived hectic days without dying. With minimal use and no gaming, you might be able to go two days between charges. The Asphalt 9: Legends battery depleted by 6% after 20 minutes of racing. With the 120-watt charger included in the package, the 5,000 mAh battery can be fully charged from empty in around 30 minutes.
Camera
This tri-lens camera is not without its problems. With an f/1.65 aperture, a large 1/1.4-inch sensor, and optical image stabilization (OIS), the primary shooter is rated at 200 megapixels. It produces better 12.5-MP images by default using 16-in-1 pixel binning, but you can also utilize the camera app to take 200-MP pictures. The primary lens’ photos are simply cropped by the 2X and 4X zoom.
The primary camera produces detailed images during the day with a respectable depth of field, although it occasionally gets the exposure wrong and the colors seem oversaturated. Several of the pictures I took had a warm, rosy tone to them. If you tap to focus on your subject, you can achieve a slight natural bokeh effect with the primary camera. If you like a more noticeable blur in the background, you may use the portrait mode. As the sun sets, bright patches may get blown out and noises may begin to sneak in. However, night mode performs a respectable job when held steady.

Sadly, an ok 8-MP ultrawide and a nearly worthless 2-MP macro lens surround the primary camera. Although the ultrawide produces images with marginally colder hues than the primary camera, it is more noisy and has trouble in low light. Given that all it seems to generate are hazy, low-resolution photos, I really do not understand the purpose of the macro lens. Better close-ups are captured by the main camera.
While most people will stay with the primary shooter, the subpar secondary cameras might not be too big of a problem. A good 16-MP front-facing camera is also included for taking selfies and making video calls. You can choose between 1080p at up to 240 frames per second or 4K at 30 frames per second for the highest quality footage. The video I recorded seems crisp and fluid.
Software
The software is the other significant shortcoming here, aside from the unreliable camera. With Xiaomi’s hectic and annoying MIUI on top, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ comes pre-installed with Android 13. The Xiaomi Poco X6 Pro (7/10, WIRED Review) comes with Android 14, although I would have rather had Xiaomi’s redesigned HyperOS. The Redmi comes with the bare minimum of four years of security patches and three years of Android updates.
Bloatware is a problem; it comes with a lot of games and apps that you should probably remove right away. However, the phone includes Google’s Play Store right out of the box and would gladly accept your preferred apps, offering a ton of storage space. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ functions well in the UK and supports 5G; however, verify the specifications page for the bands. Additionally, it only supports Wi-Fi 6, not 6E or 7, although most people will find that adequate.
Comparison with Other Device
In the end, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ is a reasonably priced choice. The main conundrum I see for buyers considering the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ is the similar Xiaomi Poco X6 Pro’s nearly £100 price difference. You should also take into account Samsung’s Galaxy A54 5G (8/10, WIRED recommends) and Google’s Pixel 7A (8/10) in this price range.
